We are getting close to the end of the endurance season now, which means that Red Dragon is also just round the corner. Entries close at midnight on Friday 16th September.

Red Dragon offers a fantastic opportunity to travel away for a long weekend, taking advantage of the superb facilities offered by the venue at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells. The number of different routes available enable the endurance rider to compete not just for one day, but for two or even three days, and experience something different each day.

To help with travel costs and so encourage riders to come for a long weekend, we have reduced the first day’s stabling charge to what it costs us at £30 (which includes two bales of straw). Stabling for two nights only adds another £10, and another £10 for three nights or more. Camping and day-corralling is available free of charge provided that a stable is booked for the same number of nights. Overnight corralling is not permitted by the Showground.

Remember that Red Dragon is not just for the top riders. We offer a Pleasure Ride route of 34km on all three days and a 26km route on Saturday and Sunday. These routes are also available as Graded Endurance Rides. For those who wish to ride a little further, there is a superb 44km route which is markedly different from the 34km route. There are multiday classes of the Dragon’s Days, the Dragon’s Egg and the Dragon’s Claw that combine these distances over two or three days.

Now what about “That Hill” which everyone talks about!? Aberedw Hill really is not as bad as some think. The total climb from the bottom to the top is about 150m rising up a wide track - and then pause to take in the beautiful views at the top, perhaps with a “sea” of mist in the valleys.

As the home of the Royal Welsh Show, the venue has amazing facilities for all of us. 300 stables, 80 of them under a covered barn, spacious camping facilities, purpose-built loos and showers, an on-site lodge and restaurant that provides evening meals for us on Friday and Saturday evening, a licenced bar open to non-residents, an outside caterer open all day, a purpose-built ride office building with trade stands, Red Dragon merchandise and vetting under cover in a large barn.

Oh yes, and we might just have a very interesting guest speaker for Saturday evening; no promises yet – watch this space!

We will provide a downloadable venue map and schedule an online Zoom briefing a week before the event that all attendees can attend if they so wish.
